Durango is the capital city, located right in the heart of the northern state with the same name. This municipality and city is a beautiful destination also known as the “land of the scorpions” and the land of the “film land”, the first due to the presence of this arachnid, which is an important symbol of the city and the state; the second one because it has been a natural scene of western movies, the most recent and famous is “The Mask of Zorro”. Besides, it is the birthplace of famous artists such as the Bracho Brothers and Revueltas Brothers.
The most famous tourist attractions are the magnificent Historical Center of a unique baroque architecture that enhances its beauty and makes it good to visit this beautiful city. The buildings are of various types and shapes. Hacienda de la Ferreria de Flores, for example, is completely restored and it was originally built as an industrial hacienda, due to the production of iron in the XIX Century; Templo de Analco is a Latin cross temple and dates from Porfirio Diaz days, it was built over the ancient mission that gave rise to the city of Durango; Santuario de Guadalupe began in 1653-1658, originally as a rest home, and many others such as the Victoria Theatre, the Zambrano Palace, Plaza de Armas, Conjunto Cultural Durango, the Civil Hospital, El Aguacate Building, Basilica Menor Cathedral, Universidad Juarez del Estado Main Building, Palacio de Gobierno, Casa del Gobierno and other outstanding buildings in Durango’s architecture. The Escarzaga Palace is a French style mansion which is famous for its romantic presence.
Some of the richest cultural places in the state are located in this city, museums such as: the Durango Popular Cultures Museum, Museo del Aguacate, the
“Angel Zarraga” Contemporary Art Museum and Museo del Libro, are places dedicated to the preservation of the historical and cultural legacy of the city and the state.
The textiles making is a handcraft activity that has become well-known and has won respect due to the quality of its products. Gastronomically, the canned food has become a regional emblem, due to the fact that the conservation of food to be enjoyed out of season is one of the specialties of the local people.
The rich natural environment offers spectacular scenery such as springs, rivers, mountain zones and natural parks turned into natural reserves due to the varied and peculiar flora and fauna. The people interested in traveling to the capital of the state will surely be pleased.
